“No-bed Syndrome”: Do the Right Thing- Kennedy Agyapong to Govt

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Agyapong, has urged the government to take practical actions to resolve the “No-bed Syndrome”.

He recognises that the prevailing issue with major public health facilities extends beyond technicality.

The ‘no-bed syndrome’ is not just a technical issue; it is a matter of life and death. And it demands urgency, commitment and leadership. Ghanaians deserve better. And together, we must make sure that no one is ever turned away when they need care the most.”

He suggested that the government strengthen and properly equip District hospitals with adequate beds, logistics and personnel to handle more cases.

“At the same time, we need to add real value to our CHPS compounds by expanding their capacity to include observation and basic emergency care. If we get this right, we will significantly reduce the congestion at our regional and teaching hospitals,” he added.

It follows the death of a hit-and-run victim after being turned away for lack of beds in some major health facilities. Following this, the Health Ministry directed that patients be given the needed health service when they report emergencies.

In an ensuing situation, a viral video of patients receiving treatment on the floor at the Emergency Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital surfaced over the weekend, sparking concerns.
