Next Thursday Declared a Holiday
The government has announced next week Thursday as a statutory public holiday.
April 11, 2024, marks Eid-ul-Fitr, an Islamic festival that symbolises an end to a month-long fast by all Muslims across the globe.
In a statement, the Ministry of Interior directed that the holiday be observed across the country.
“The general public is hereby informed that Thursday, 11th April 2024 which marks Eidul-Fitr, is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”
Eid-ul-fitr occurs at the end of the holy month of Ramadan each year during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, an obligatory fasting which is one of the five pillars of Islam.
This year, Muslims began the fast on March 23 after sighting the new moon.
During this period, Muslims are obligated to abstain from sexual relations, sinful speech and vices.
The end of the 29 or 30-day fasting is observed with a grand celebration called Eid-ul-Fitr, which falls on the first day of Shawwal on the Islamic calendar.
