Newmont: 3 Dead, Others Injured in Police Clash with Alleged Gold Thieves
The police have confirmed the death of three suspected thieves at the Newmont mining site at Ntotroso in the Ahafo Region during a confrontation.
According to a police statement, four others got injured in the ensuing clash when the suspects allegedly breached security to steal gold last night, Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
“During the operation to contain the situation, the Police confronted the suspects, leading to the death of three persons and injuries to four others.”
The development, it said, stirred reaction from irate residents in the area.
However, it said an engagement with the community leaders and the youth throughout the night by the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, alongside the Regional Police calmed nerves.
“There has been no reprisal attacks or escalation of the situation in the community.”
In the meantime, a special investigation team from Accra has been dispatched to the area to investigate the incident.
Additionally, a reinforcement team has also been sent to the community to ensure peace, security, law and order.
It further disclosed the three deceased victims are Muslims, and the due process of the law is being followed for the bodies to be released to their families for burial later today.
