New Academic Calendar in the Best Interest of Children and Parents – Deputy PRO of Ministry of Education
The Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, Ernest Akosa has said that, though the new academic calendar poses an economic challenge to parents, it is in the best interest of both parents and children.
He explained that the Coronavirus disease affected the educational system and changed the academic calendar.
“Countries under the West African Examnination Council have adjusted their academic calendar after COVID-19. There is therefore the need for Ghana to catch up,” he said.
The host of Nkwantananso on Opemsuo Radio, George Agyei, inquired from Mr Akosa whether parents were adequately informed and sensitized about the new academic calendar before its implementation since schools now have shorter vacations.
The PRO for the Ministry of Education indicated that, sensitization can only be done at the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) level but some parents seem unconcerned about PTA meetings.
He however urged parents to bear with the situation.
Furthermore, he said that there is no directive from the Ministry or Ghana Education Service requiring all final year students in Junior High School to be in a boarding house.
“I am not aware of any such policy requiring JHS 3 students to be in the boarding house. I believe it is an arrangement made at the PTA level because they believe it will help the children pass,” he added.
