NDC Petitions CID To Arrest Bryan Acheampong
A lawyer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service over a “treasonable” comment by Bryan Acheampong, a member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The petition to the CID was delivered on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.
Lawyer Abraham Amaliba in the petition referenced the statements made at a rally climaxing a health walk organised by the NPP in Kwahu in the Eastern Region on Saturday, April 8, 2023, by Bryan.
Bryan was captured asserting the NPP won’t hand over power to an NDC government after the 2024 elections.
“NDC party will collapse. If the NDC dares to use threats, violence and foolishness in the 2024 election, we will let them know we have the men. We will show them that we have the men. We have the men![He screamed to emphasize]. It will never happen that we, the NPP, will stand on a platform to hand over power to the NDC. It will never happen! We will make sure NPP remains in government at all cost,” Citinews quoted him as saying.
His comment has been described by the NDC as “utterly reckless and treasonable”.
In the petition, the NDC also referenced the alleged role played by Bryan in the disturbances that characterised the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election in 2019 to buttress its point that he was capable of carrying out the threat.
“Your petitioner wishes to remind you of Bryan Acheampong’s unilateral and illegal deployment of NPP hoodlums garbed in National Security Operatives uniforms to assault Hon Sam Dzata George, innocent electorates and maimed some NDC supporters in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Bye-election.
“Your petitioner says that given the infamous and unenviable track record of Hon Bryan Acheampong in organising NPP hoodlums to unleash violence on innocent Ghanaians, his statement on the 8th day of April 2023, borders on National Security threats and democracy and should not be taken lightly.”
In addition to the petition, the petitioner added audio and videos of the said statement.
But the NPP has defended Bryan stating, “Bryan Acheampong’s comment can only be interpreted to mean that the NPP, just as it has done in the past, is determined to do everything legally possible to win the 2024 general elections.”
According to the governing party, the comment was meant to encourage supporters of the NPP whose spirit has been dampened by threatening comments from some high-profile NDCs over the 2024 general elections.
