Napoli Replace Mazzarri
Serie A side Napoli have replaced Manager Walter Mazzarri with Francesco Calzona after their 1-1 draw against Genoa on Saturday.
The defending champions are far from defending their third title which came after 33 years in the 2022/2023 season under the leadership of Luciano Spalletti.
They are currently ninth on the league table with 27 points away from the top.
In a tweet, Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis announced the departure of the 64-year-old who went on record as the second coach to take Napoli after Luciano Spalletti’s departure.
“I thank Walter Mazzarri, a friend of the De Laurentiis family and of Napoli, for supporting the team in a complex moment. It will remain in the hearts of Neapolitans and our family.”
He also announced the appointment of Slovakia national team manager Calzona, who makes his third comeback to the club.
“Welcome back to Francesco Calzona, who has already worked with us with both Sarri and Spalletti.”
The 55-year-old coached the club between 2015 and 2018 and from 2021 to 2022. He has been the head coach of Slovakia since 2022.
He will superintend over the team’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 against Barcelona tomorrow.
