MP Calls for Urgent Action as Drownings Rise in Riverine Commmunities

Hon. Worlase Kpeli, Member of Parliament (MP) for Afram Plains North, has raised concerns about the alarming rate of drowning incidents in Ghana’s rural and riverine communities. He is therefore calling for urgent measures to provide water safety training for young people living near rivers and other water bodies.

The MP emphasized that many of these tragedies are preventable through early education in swimming and basic water survival skills.

He urged institutions such as National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Ghana Navy to collaborate on targeted safety training programmes to empower youth and save lives.

“We cannot continue to accept these drowning incidents as a normal part of life,” he said.

“It is long overdue for leaders at all levels to act decisively and ensure that no more lives are needlessly lost.”

Hon. Kpeli stressed that Parliament has a critical role to play in shaping national policy and allocating resources to address the issue. He concluded that equipping young people with life-saving skills is essential for their survival and well-being.
