Minority Demands Removal of Clerk on Appointments Committee

The Minority side of the Appointments Committee of Parliament has demanded the immediate removal of the clerk assigned to the Committee, Gifty Jiagge-Gobbah.
During a session on Friday, January 31, 2025, when the Minority side reported late to the vetting of Health Minister-designate, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, its leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin fumed at the clerk’s failure to notify them about the meeting and delay the commencement of the vetting in their absence.
He therefore accused the clerk of being partisan and condemned her action.
“We don’t need you as a clerk,” he yelled.
“You did not even notify us. You are doing your party bidding. You this clerk is that the way a Civil Servant must behave? It’s a shame on you…You want to disrupt Parliament.”
He recalled how the clerk always insisted on the presence of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmakers during meetings while his party was in government.
“What else do we do? And you this partisan clerk, when I was majority leader, you insisted that the minority must be here. Today, you called for a meeting without us. Shame on you.”
The Effutu MP condemned what he deemed an attempt to mistreat them due to their meagre size, dispelling arguments that he was trying to disrupt the government.
“We are not against your government. We’ve been cooperative. You should be fair to us. We are ready to help, don’t mistreat us. The fact that we are a minority doesn’t mean mistreat us. No opposition will help the government to form its government as quickly as possible.”
This comes a day after the Committee broke into a melee, destroying a microphone and other properties in the Conference Room.
