Minority Demands Immediate Announcement Of Producer Price For Cocoa Beans; Proposing Not Less Than Ghc1000
The minority in parliament has charged the government to immediately announce a new producer price for cocoa beans in the country. The NDC MPs want the government to increase a bag of cocoa beans to thousand cedis from the current six hundred and sixty cedis. COCOBOD is proposing an increment of 838 cedis for the 2022/23 crop season.
But addressing the media in parliament, a minority spokesperson on finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson revealed Ghanaian cocoa farmers are smuggling their Cocoa to the Ivory Coast where prices are high and far better than Ghana as a result of a delay in announcing the new prices.
The former deputy finance minister argued payment of a premium price to farmers is non-negotiable if the smuggling is to stop
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, MP for Juaboso whose constituency shares a border with neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire revealed how farmers were smuggling beans due to Ghana’s low pricing.
