Mahama Historically Visits Ghana’s High Commission In Kenya
President John Dramani Mahama has made a historic visit to Ghana’s High Commission in Nairobi in Kenya.
The visit on January 26 forms part of his trip to the East African country to participate in the special meeting of the African Union’s (AU) Heads of State and Governments which opens today, January 27.
According to H.E Damptey Bediako Asare, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya, with concurrent accreditation to Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, President Mahama’s visit to his office was the first by a sitting President of Ghana.
The residence and office are sitting on almost four acres of land owned by Ghana since 1960.
The need for renovation became necessary after the Mission which closed in the early 80s was reopened in 2008.
“By the time we returned to the Mission, the facilities were literally not habitable so we started addressing the issue with the Ministry and the Ministry graciously agreed to help us out and they mobilised the fund and we were able to do this,” H.E Asare said.
He said the chancery was opened for use in April 2024 while the residential facility was inaugurated a month later.
He described the visit as an honour in an interaction with the media.
“There is no higher honour for you to have your President visiting you in the first place and for him to be the first President to have visited, I think we are beyond measure, grateful. We feel honoured. A few political leaders have come here but this is the first time that we have a sitting President visiting the Mission. Beyond measure, we are more than honoured.”
