LGBTQI+ Activities Likely to Happen in the Future, But Now, No Way – Ursula Owusu

Minister of Communications and Digitisation, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West, Hon Ursula Owusu has hinted that the activities of the LGBTQI+ is likely to resurface in Ghana in the next century, but currently, there is no fertile ground for it.

She highlighted that while laws are being put in place to prohibit such activities, the future remains uncertain for its revival.

“Maybe 100 years from now, some Ghanaians may decide that they want it. You and I will not be there.” she said.

She emphasized that President Nana Akufo-Addo had previously made a similar comment, acknowledging the uncertainty of the future and the potential for LGBTQI+ activities to reemerge.

“These social and cultural issues… I don’t believe that in Ghana so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged to change public opinion and establish a new paradigm in Ghana. I think that it is something that is bound to happen. Like elsewhere in the world, the activities of individuals and groups will eventually lead to change,” the president said.

Hon Ursula Owusu also emphasized that the ongoing discussions and current laws in the country do not support the growth of LGBTQI+ activities.

She made these statements during the second reading of the Anti-LGBTQI bill in Parliament.

In a swift response, Hon John Ntim Fordjour, the MP for Assin South, firmly stated that Ghana will not pass any LGBTQI+ bill now or in the future.
