Lands Ministry Withdraws Lithium Agreement

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has announced the withdrawal of the Lithium Agreement currently before Parliament.

In a statement, it said the decision became necessary following extensive consultations and constructive engagements with key stakeholders across the country.

It comes after the agreement in its current form came under fierce criticism. Critics argue that the terms of the agreement do not provide adequate national benefits.

The Ministry acknowledged the concerns raised.

“This decision reflects the Government’s commitment to responsive and participatory governance, ensuring that all policies serve the national interest and incorporate the views of the people.”

It further affirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to refining the legal and regulatory landscape for the benefit of every Ghanaian.

It noted that a process of refining the legal instrument has been formally initiated based on substantive feedback received from stakeholders.

“This is to ensure that our natural resource governance meets the highest standards of fairness and national interest. The Ministry will continue to compile and review the valuable proposals received during these engagements.”

It assured the public that a revised agreement, grounded in the national interest, will be laid before Parliament in due course.

It added, “The Ministry expresses its sincere gratitude to all individuals and institutions whose insights and engagement continue to guide this process. We reaffirm our commitment to working collaboratively towards achieving outcomes that promote the prosperity and well-being of every Ghanaian.”
