Lands Ministry Adopts Additional Measures to Tackle Galamsey
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources says it has adopted additional measures to tackle illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey across the country.
A statement issued by the Ministry on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, said the sector Minister, Hon Samuel Abu Jinapor held engagements with Regional Ministers to review already existing measures during which additional measures were employed.
“Government will continue with the dual strategy of reformative measures and strict enforcement. The Regional Ministers, alongside their respective Regional Security Councils (REGSEC), have been mandated to intensify enforcement actions within their various jurisdictions to contain incidents of illegal small-scale mining.
“Additionally, the Minerals Commission will enhance our reformative efforts, particularly, through ramping up the establishment of responsible and legal community mining schemes which have regard to the preservation of our nation’s environment and landscape.”
The Ministry further assured the public of the government’s commitment to restoring order and ensuring mining activities are conducted sustainably and legally in the national interest.
This comes after heightened concerns about the spiralling rate of illegal mining activities across the country at the expense of the various water bodies.
