Lady Julia-pioneered KGL Eve Medical Centre Opened

The first phase of the three-phased KGL Eve Medical Centre, a project masterminded by the wife of the King of the Asante Kingdom, Lady Julia Osei Tutu II, has been commissioned and opened to the general public.
The US$2 million facility is located at the Kumasi Medical Village at Boadi at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in the Ashanti Region.

Designed to hold consulting rooms for Psychiatric services, therapy and counselling units, inpatient wards, diagnostic and pharmacy units, rehabilitation spaces, administrative and staff facilities, it is purposed to provide dignified mental health services, general outpatient medical care, general obstetric support, youth and student counselling and professional psychosocial services.

Conceived by the Eve Medical Foundation, the project was fully funded by the KGL Group.

It was commissioned on December 9, 2025, by Lady Julia, the Patron of the Eve Foundation and Vice President of Ghana, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.

The event was attended by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, Administrator of Ghana Medical Trust Care, Obuobia Darko Opoku, and others.

The Second and third phases of the project are scheduled to be completed by 2027.

Vision Conception
Recalling the conception of the project during the celebration of its birth, Lady Julia said the idea was born out of the fact that the realisation of the silent killer act of mental illness for many women, young people and families.

“Depression, anxiety, postpartum challenges, childhood behavioural issues, stress-related complications and emotional trauma are real. They affect homes, marriages, academic performance, productivity and contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality.”

She, however, recognizes in dismay how this profound issue is shoved with silence, stigma and discrimination instead of care and understanding.

Her Majesty called for an urgent address to the mental illness as she advocated against the stigma and the shame that has shrouded the health concern.

She said the medical facility is built on three pillars namely Accessibility- that support is made available at where people live, study and work; Dignity- that no one should feel ashamed to seek help; and Holistic Care- that mental health must be integrated with general medical service, wellness and counselling.

“Seeing this vision come to pass is truly humbling and exciting for me… As we commission the KGL Eve Medical Centre, we celebrate not only the building but a promise. A promise that every person who walks through these doors will be met with dignity, care and hope.”

Meanwhile, she encouraged the public to help break the silence around mental health.

“Let us embrace the truth that mental health is not a weakness. It is a part of our well-being.”

She used the occasion to celebrate Nana Agyemang Prempeh, co-founder of the KGL Eve Medical Centre as the engine, strategist and constant force behind the project over the past 18 months.

Lady Julia equally acknowledged the contribution of KGL Group led by its Chairman and Founder of the KGL Group, Mr. Alex Dadey, saying, “Your philanthropy is nation-building.”

Healthcare Expansion
In her remarks, the Vice President stated that the centre contributes directly to the efforts to expand care options, adding that it will address a very important service gap.

“This is complementing the national mental health policy and universal mental health coverage objectives; strengthening service delivery capacity; interacting mental and general medical services; supporting care for youth, mothers, students and families; and providing a model for community oriented health investment.”

It is also positioned to reduce delays and pressure on existing health facilities, she added.

HE Opoku-Agyemang recognised that the facility is a practical response to a real and growing demand for integrated medical and medical health services.

A Place to Feel Heard, Respected and Empowered
Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo, Chairman of the Eve Medical Foundation, said the centre marks a shift toward placing women’s health at the centre of national development.

“For decades, women’s health has existed in the background, understudied, underfunded and sometimes even misunderstood. Too many women have had to navigate a system that wasn’t fully designed with them in mind. Today, we are changing the narrative. This medical centre will stand as a sign that women’s health is not a footnote but a foundation”

He stated that the centre is designed for women to receive care, feel heard, respected and empowered in the provision of reproductive health care, mental health, maternal health, preventative screenings and chronic medical heath.

Approach to Women’s Health
For his part, Dr Eugene Kobla Dordoye, the Acting Chief Executive of the Mental Health Authority of Ghana, highlighted the implications of women’s mental illness on the national fabric.

“If our women are the caregivers of this nation, their mental wellbeing must be treated as a national treasure- protected, nurtured and prioritized. This is why today matters because by strengthening the minds of the woman, we strengthen the heart of Ghana.”

Access to Health Care
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of KGL Group and Foundation, said the significant multi-million-dollar investment in health care reflects their commitment to bridging health care inequality.

“No Ghanaian should be denied health care because of who they are or where they live.”

He noted that the facility is the only dedicated mental wellness centre in this side of the country built to serve millions of people across the Ashanti Region, Bono, Ahafo and the northern parts of Ghana.

He emphasised that the medical centre is not an institution of confinement but place of healing, hope and human dignity.

Lady Julia as Inspiration
The financier of the project in his speech hailed Lady Julia for her visionary leadership, compassion and your unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of Asanteman.

Celebrating her, Mr Apau Dadey stated that the project did not begin as a structure but her conviction.

“Long before most of us imagined what this facility would become, you already saw its impact and its necessity. I remember all our engagements, how you passionately advocated for a centre of dignity and a healing for Asanteman.

“You carried this project not as an idea but as a duty to the people you love and serve. Your sincerity moved me. Your persistence inspired me, and your heart convinced me. It takes a really good heart to carry the burdens of others as your own.”

He affirmed that building witnesses her leadership which is grounded in empathy and service.

“Your Highness, Asanteman recognises what your heart has built. Ghana recognises what your commitment has achieved and generations yet unborn will remember your role in opening the doors to healing to countless families.”
