Kumasi Traders Bare Teeth at Mayor

Traders using unapproved spaces in the Central Business District have bared their teeth at the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi.
The irate traders adorned in red headbands and armbands mounted a protest on April 24, 2025, to oppose the exercise that was originally slated to begin but had been postponed.
“Zuba came to meet us. We won’t allow him to evict us. The land belongs to our grandfather.”
At a presser two weeks ago, the KMA boss announced what he called the military-democratic style to evict recalcitrant traders at the Central Business District (CBS) who may fail to abide by the two-week ultimatum set by the Assembly.
This strategy, he said, entails whipping traders who may defy orders against trading on roads and using pedestrian walkways.
This drew nationwide backlash which forced him to withdraw the statement and revise the strategy he intended to use.
The KMA boss, having succumbed to a nationwide backlash over his plan to lash recalcitrant traders, says he will use legal processes.
“I won’t lash anyone. I will take them to court,” he said in an interview as he expressed disappointment with the media narrative around his quest to restore Kumasi to its former glory.
He reiterated that his plan was well-intentioned and not aimed at manhandling traders.
“I am from here. I am an Asante and I have no intention to manhandle my fellows but I’m determined to restore sanity and proper sanitary conditions to attract investments so that the youth will get employment. The spate of the filth is such that if aggressive measures are not used and we fall on the status quo where we go to court, the filth will remain.”
