John Dumelo Sets Record Straight on Viral Legon Altercation

The Ayawaso West Wuogon Parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dumelo has presented a different narrative to his viral altercation and near-fisticuffs confrontation with a man at the Voters Registration Centre at the University of Ghana, Legon earlier this week.

It was widely reported that the actor got infuriated by the man’s opposition to his attempt to speak to his girlfriend who had gotten registered.

However, according to a statement released by the camp of the aspiring lawmaker, the incident was provoked by supporters of his opponent who is the current MP for the area, Hon Lydia Alhassan.

“On May 27, 2024, Mr. John Dumelo was performing his usual duties at the registration centre, engaging peacefully with registrants. Some members of the NPP at the centre attempted to interfere with Mr. Dumelo’s interactions with voters, fearing that his engagement might negatively impact their own prospects. This led to disrespectful behaviour towards Mr. Dumelo.

“It is important to note that Mr. John Dumelo, being a well-known celebrity, often attracts requests for photo opportunities from registrants. We believe this makes the Member of Parliament, Lydia Alhassan, uncomfortable, leading her to instruct her supporters to attack John Dumelo on several occasions during the registration exercise.”

According to the statement issued by his spokesperson, Benjamin Madugu Avornyotse, the actor confronted the disruptive individuals and warned them to conduct themselves decorously or face similar actions from his supporters after several attempts to defuse the consistent attacks against him.

The camp thus sent a caution to its opponent threatening to retaliate in defence of itself.

“We wish to send a strong message to Lydia Alhassan and the NPP members in Ayawaso West Wuogon that we will not allow such ugly events of violence and intimidation to continue going into the 2024 general election. We will be left with no other option but to defend ourselves and protect the sanctity of the will of the Ghanaian people.”

Urging the public to disregard the false narrative about the video, Dumelo affirmed that he wouldn’t conduct himself in a manner that undermines the integrity of the registration exercise.
