Jean Mensah Shouldn’t Remain In Office Beyond January 7- Sam George

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Constituency, Sam George is calling for the head of the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensah.

According to him, her tenure should not extend beyond the takeover of the next government led by John Dramani Mahama.

“This makes it abundantly clear that you should not remain in office beyond 7th January 2025. God save our beloved Nation.”

The lawmaker is of the view that the current leadership has plunged the Commission into disrepute.

“Dear Electoral Commission Ghana, stop disgracing yourself. It is shameful enough that you have allowed an enviable institution to become a household of misfits,” he wrote on Facebook while reacting to the EC’s justification for re-collation of some Parliamentary results in the 2024 elections.

He continued, “If you do not know that the CI used for the 2004 elections differs from the CI used in 2024, you have no business at the Electoral Commission.”

Sam George isn’t the first to call for her removal. Many members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)- which will take over the administration of the country from January 7- have called for an end to her leadership.

But Professor Stephen Adei, a former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) disagrees with the demand.

“It’s much easier to prove corruption than incompetence. If the Electoral Commissioner has violated fundamental principles, it must be proven. Otherwise, dismissing them because of their appointment by a previous government undermines institutional credibility.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed Jean Mensah to the office after dismissing the former Chair, Charlotte Osei, and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwah on Thursday, June 28, 2018.
