I Need Development Not Statues – Otumfuo
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Simon Osei Mensah has recounted an incident where the King of the Asante Kingdom swiftly called for the removal of Otumfuo Opoku Ware’s statue from the Suame Roundabout to pave way for the construction of the Interchange.
Addressing the Regional House of Chiefs on their last meeting for the year on November 15, 2024, the longest serving regional minister expressed his immense appreciation to the Monarch.
He underscored the plausible commitment of His Majesty towards development.
According to him, when preparations were complete for work to begin, it became necessary to dismantle the statue of the king at the centre of the roundabout.
Together with his officials, they sought permission to take it down and the King readily agreed.
“When we went to Otumfuo, he said he needed development and not a statue and directed that we get people from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to take it down.”
“I stand here in appreciation to the King. Nananom help me thank Otumfuo for this.”
The Minister appeared before the traditional authorities to render an account of his stewardship over the past seven years, which they found satisfactory.
He outlined projects in the education, sports, health, agriculture, road, security and more.
