I Lost My Baby and My Eldest Son Was On Verge of Death; Adwoa Safo on Absence

The former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has provided clarity to her absence from her legislative and executive duties from the end of 2021 to 2022.

As a lawmaker and Gender Minister then, her absence attracted public backlash as she fell out with the public.

However, in an interview on Thursday, she disclosed that the loss of her new baby and the sudden illness of her eldest son who resided in the United States of America accounted for that decision.

According to her, the boy suddenly fell ill, requiring her full attention to avoid another child loss.

“In 2021 I was going for the election, I was heavily pregnant. Yes, I have a role to play as a mother. I lost my baby. I didn’t get what I was expecting out of the term of my pregnancy. It didn’t end there. In the time of my grief, my oldest son felt I was in the United States. I had to be there.”

“My son was on the verge of death, I had the choice to stay as a mother and take care of my son or take up my position as the Member of Parliament and as a Minister,” she said in an interview on JoyNews.

She blankly noted that she had no regrets about choosing her son over her job.

“I did and don’t regret it.”

Contrary to some reports in the past, she said she notified the President through the then Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare before leaving the country for the US.

“I made sure I sent notice to those who ought to know and I wasn’t there the way they are making the picture look. I was there and I was making sure what to be said, I communicated to all that mattered, I did.”

But for the challenges, she faced along the line of her duty, she said, she handled her job with commitment, hard work, meticulous, and very detailed.

“I made sure I did my work the way I was supposed to do it both within Parliament and outside of Parliament.”
