High Rate Of Robbery Sparks Insecurity In Obuasi; Fear Grips Residents
President of the Obuasi Community Mining, Emmanuel Ayamga has emphasized that there has been a high rate of insecurity in Obuasi as a result of the high level of youth unemployment in the city which he describes as an unfortunate situation.
Speaking with newsmen, Mr. Ayamga said, the unemployment rate in Obuasi has developed constant migration for the indigenes to acquire jobs and to be able to cater to their wards and families.
According to him, the situation in Obuasi now is a terrible one in which authorities must give the needed attention. He narrated that Obuasi is known to be a robbery-free environment but now witnessing extreme cases of armed robbery.
This has caused residents to live in fear and panic as the city battles with the phenomenon, he added.
The Obuasi Community Mining President revealed that Anglo-gold Ashanti has benefited so much from the community for over 120 years but has refused to give back to the community and sidelined the youth in the area of employment. He indicated that this point triggered the youth to stage a demonstration but this action proved futile.
He was speaking in reaction to the military officers’ brutality towards a member of the community who had engaged in galamsey in a video circulating on social media. These are people suspected to have been engaged in illegal activity and have been remanded for two weeks last Friday 15 July 2022.
Mr. Emmanuel Ayamga narrated that the suspected galamseyers were operating in an abandoned concession that belongs to AngloGold Ashanti.
He alleged that AngloGold Ashanti has been unfair towards the youth of Obuasi and should be considerate of the welfare of the people.
He called on the government, the President of the Republic His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Parliament, and the chiefs in the community to come to their aid and fulfill the promises.
