Guru Injuncts UG SRC Election

Ghanaian rapper Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru has secured an interim injunction against the conduct of the Student’s Representative Council (SRC) Presidential election of the University of Ghana (UG).

He is challenging his disqualification from the race by the Council’s Vetting Committee.

The rapper filed a petition with the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Students Affairs of the institution on Monday, August 19, 2024, and says an interim injunction has also been served on the electoral body against proceeding with the election.

“Additionally, our legal team has submitted an interim injunction to the Judicial Board, requesting a temporary halt to the electoral process until a proper hearing and ruling can be made.”

This was contained in a press statement jointly appended by Guru and his Vice Presidential candidate.

They further expressed confidence in the Judicial Board for a just outcome, adding, “We understand the frustration and concern this situation has caused among our supporters and the general student body. However, we want to assure you that our commitment to building an SRC with everyone remains stronger than ever.

“We shall ensure that there is no discrimination towards any student, whether resident or non-resident, able or with special needs, first Degree or PFD, Local or International, Korle-Bu. City Campus or Distance education, including all the Regional Learning Centers across the length and breadth of the country.”

Background
The electoral body of the University of Ghana Students Representative Council (UGSRC) in a statement on August 16, 2024, announced the disqualification of the celebrity after a vetting process on August 11.

It explained that he was disqualified on the basis that he is a non-resident student.

According to the SRC Constitution,  “A student shall not be qualified to any executive office unless: he is qualified to contest under his hall’s constitution, except that a provision requiring a student to be in at least his third year in this University shall not disqualify such a person from contesting for any office under this article.”

The electoral body in its statement said the disqualified candidates confirmed their non-resident status during the vetting process.
