Guardians Petition GES over “Abuse” of Ward

The guardians of a final year student with the Labone Senior High School have written to the Ghana Education Service (GES) asking for an impartial investigation into circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse and expulsion of their ward from the boarding house.

According to the petition, the student identified as Master Abraham Sambou was “falsely” accused of using a mobile phone by the school prefect, an accusation he denied but allegedly won him a slap from the Senior House Master identified as Mr Eric Agyemang.

This was June 18, the petition dated June 21, 2024, specified.

“In addition to the physical abuse, he was prevented from attending classes on the same day and was kept in the senior House Master’s office without food or water until 2 pm when we arrived to meet with the school’s management,” it added.

It said despite denying the accusation, he was expelled from the boarding house without due process.

During their engagement with the school authorities, the petition said the Senior Housemaster justified his action, which was supported by the Headmistress identified as Mrs Rejoice Acolor.

“Mrs Rejoice Acolor brazenly supported Mr Agyemang’s action and stated that she would have acted even more harshly by slapping my ward and hitting him with her shoes. She also mentioned that if the incident had occurred before the registration for WASCCE, she would have ensured that Master Sambou was not registered for the exam.”

The family who reside in Kasoa in the Central Region are worried about the strain this will put on their ward who will now have to commute to Accra for school, especially as he is in his final year. Additionally, they claim the alleged slap has left their ward with a headache and pain in the left ear and eye.

Among their demands is an impartial probe into the allegations against their ward, holding the senior house master accountable for the alleged abuse, monitoring of the conduct of the headmistress and implementation of policies to prevent recurrence.
