Group Drags NCA, Attorney General To Supreme Court Over SIM Registration And Sanctions
The People’s Project, a movement founded and led by retired musician Kwame Asare Obeng, otherwise known as Kwame A Plus, has sued the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Attorney General over the SIM registration exercise.
The plaintiff, first of all, wants the court to declare as “arbitrary, capricious, abuse of discretionary powers, null, void and of no legal effect”, the directive by Communication and Digitalisation Minister, Ursula Owusu, to have unregistered SIM disconnected at the end of September 2022, as the majority of subscribers do not yet have Ghana Card-the only accepted document for the exercise.
It also wants the directive by the NCA for unregistered SIMs to be blocked for 48 hours within each week while not all Ghanaians have the Ghana card, declared “arbitrary, capricious, unconstitutional and of no legal effect”.
Most importantly, the group wants the court to suspend interim sanctions instituted by the NCA until the National Identification Authority (NIA) provides Ghana cards for all Ghanaians.
Finally, it wants the court to injunct the defendants from carrying out the disconnection of unregistered SIM cards on September 30, 2022.
