Green Ghana Project a Call, a Step in the Right Direction – Minister
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, has called upon individuals from all walks of life to join forces in combating climate change.
Speaking at the launch of the 2023 Green Ghana Day project at the KNUST, led by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on May 17, 2023, Minister Osei Mensah expressed that the Green Ghana Day Project signifies a crucial step in the right direction, urging citizens to recognize their responsibility towards the preservation of the planet.
He stated, “It is our duty as responsible citizens to take the appropriate actions and sustainable practices to mitigate the posing impacts of climate change. The best appropriate way to preserve the environment is to vigorously plant trees and restore the country’s degraded landscape and mitigate the global impacts of climate change.”
He further emphasized the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding the Ashanti Region’s abundant natural resources, tourist attractions, biodiversity, and cultural heritage from the adverse effects of climate change.
Highlighting a pressing challenge faced by the region, Minister Osei Mensah highlighted, “The biggest challenge facing the Region is illegal mining undertaken by some irresponsible citizens, which is depleting and destroying the forest cover and water bodies. As such, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) is committed to planting more trees to replace the lost trees.”
Expressing unwavering support for the Green Ghana Project, Minister Osei Mensah affirmed, “The ARCC and the good people of the Region are committed to the Green Ghana Project and therefore ready to go planting towards the greening of Kumasi.”
He also underscored that prior to the launch of the Green Ghana Day Project, the authorities had already initiated tree planting efforts along highways and streets in Kumasi, with the aim of creating a greener and more beautiful city.
