Green Ghana Day: 30 out of 41 Million Trees Planted Since 2021 Survived- Jinapor
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, says of the over 41 million trees planted across the country since the inception of the Green Ghana Day, 30 million have survived.
The exercise started in 2021 during which a target of five million trees was exceeded.
“On the maiden edition, we targeted five million trees and with your support, over seven million trees were planted. In 2022, we raised our ambition and targeted 20 million trees. Again you supported us and over 24 million trees were planted. Last year, you once more supported us to plant over 10,700,00 trees bringing the total number of trees planted to date in excess of 41 million,” he said at a presser on June 4, 2024.
According to him, field assessment report shows there was a 67% survival rate in 2021, 72% in 2022 and 81% in 2023, translating to a total of 30 million trees.
To continue this trajectory and ensure a maximum survival rate, he said the 2023 target has been maintained for 2024.
“We have decided to maintain the 2023 target of 10 million trees for 2024. This will give us space to devote some resources and attention to the trees planted over the last three years while not losing momentum on our quest to restore our degraded landscape.”
This year’s exercise will take place on June 7, 2024, and will be held under the theme “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow”.
