Govt Won’t Unduly Interfere In Universities Affairs- Vice President

Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, has assured Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene of little government interference in the affairs of the country’s public tertiary institutions.
According to Her Excellency, interference will only border on compliance.
Speaking at the 58th Congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on June 28, 2025, the country’s first female President said the government’s non-interference policy will continue to be held to high standards.
She said the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) will continue to partner with the institutions to ensure that they continue to comply with the regulations, policies and standards.
Additionally, Prof Opoku Agyemang said Governing Councils will be monitored to operate within provisions of the Statutes and Acts that govern University operations.
“The Ministry will interfere for compliance not interfere unduly with legitimate processes and operations of universities.”
The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom some months ago called for sanity in the country’s education system at all levels.
According to His Majesty, the system is critical and thereby a need to protect it from any political interference.
At a meeting with the management of the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service on February 12, 2025, Otumfuo said there should be an educational policy in place to guide the actions and decisions of political actors.
“All I want is for our education to be devoid of politics. We should have a policy that all leaders come and continue.”
