Gov’t To Cut Sod For Suame Interchange Construction

President Akufo-Addo will today, October 18, 2022 cut sod for the construction of the much-awaited Suame Interchange in the Ashanti region.

This will take place on the third day of the four-day tour of the President in the Ashanti region.

The sod-cutting ceremony will take place after Akufo-Addo meets with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Security Officers at the Headquarters of the Central Command (IDRIS Barracks) on Tuesday morning.

In Parliament in August this year, Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako-Attah, said the Suame Interchange will be in two phases, the first comprising of a four-tier interchange with ancillary work and the second comprising of the construction of the complementary interchange and inner roads.

“The government’s decision to convert the Suame Roundabout to an interchange will significantly reduce road accidents and injuries, reduce travel times and congestion as well as reduce freight transport costs,” Amoako-Atta told the House.

The Suame interchange and Local Road Network project is estimated to cost $47 million.

The project together with ten other projects across the country will be financed by seven hundred and fifty million United States dollars ($750m) syndicated loans from Afrexim Bank.

The facility was approved by Parliament in July 2022.

The delayed Suame Interchange project was among the things that provoked artisans at Suame magazine to go on a rampage against their Member of Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu when he visited them in July.

Ahead of that, some constituents from Suame staged a series of protests over the delayed project and bad road network.
