Gov’t Pays over ₵500k to Cover Free Dialysis Services
The National Insurance Authority (NIA) has released more than half a million cedis as payment for free dialysis services offered by the six teaching hospitals in the country.
The NHIA says it paid a total amount of GHS 587,236.00, marking the first month of the implementation of the Government’s support to renal patients.
The payment was made in accordance with the submitted lists of chronic dialysis patients who received the services that month.
The following hospitals received funds: Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) – GHC96,236.00; Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) – GHC77,578.00; Efia Nkwanta Regional Hospital (ENRH) – GHC92,308.00; Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH) – GHC83,470.00; Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) – GHC57,938.00; and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) – GHC179,706.00.
It also noted, “The hospitals will manage the funds and ensure that all patients who may have paid out-of-pocket during the month of June will be fully reimbursed according to the approved amount for the various categories.”
Incorporation
The Authority last month announced the incorporation of dialysis into the scheme.
Under this new arrangement, patients aged 18 and below and 60 years and above will receive all eight (8) free dialysis sessions per month under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) from June to December 2024 at the designated facilities.
Persons aged 19 to 59 years will receive two (2) free dialysis sessions per month from all the designated facilities except Korle Bu- while adult patients (19 to 59) receiving treatment at KBTH will receive a subsidy for two (2) dialysis sessions per month, meaning the NHIA will cover 50% of the cost of the two sessions.
