Govt Announces Merit-based Examination for Scholarship Applicants

The government of Ghana has instituted a merit-based examination to guide the allotment of government scholarships to Ghanaians.
This was confirmed by the Director-General of the Ghana Scholarship Authority, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei.
The first of its kind took place on Monday, where a total of 3,810 candidates from across the country sat for examination under the Hungarian Stipendium, a Government of Hungary scholarship scheme, covering various levels of study, including undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD programmes.
These exams, conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), he said, are aimed at selecting only qualified applicants on merit, in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and equal opportunity in the award of government scholarships.
It is envisioned to end the era where scholarships were reserved for cronies, the wealthy, and the politically connected.
“This is the MAHAMA STANDARD: fairness, transparency, and opportunities for every deserving Ghanaian. Under His Excellency’s #ResettingGhana leadership, the scholarship system is being reset to reward merit, not influence.”
According to him, WAEC will serve as the independent marking agency to guarantee credibility and integrity in the process.
