Ghana’s High Commissioner Welcomes Asantehene to South Africa

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, H.E Benjamin Anani Quashie, and Staff of the Pretoria Mission have welcomed the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to the country as His Majesty takes a leave of absence.

The officials gave His Majesty a warm and dignified reception at the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on February 4, 2026.

According to the High Commission, His Majesty was graciously received and later conveyed to the Residence for a brief engagement with the High Commissioner and members of his staff.

The visit underscores the meaningful intersection of Ghana’s revered traditional authority and diplomatic engagement, further strengthening the cultural ties between Ghana and South Africa.

The Asantehene took a break from all official duties effective February 3, 2026.

The leave is expected to enable the Monarch to catch up with the needed respite and refreshment to continue his duties to Asanteman and Ghana at large.

In the Asantehene’s absence, Kumasi was delegated to Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, Bantamahene, while Asanteman was committed to Nana Dwamena Akenten II, Offinsohene.

It follows the celebration of the first Akwasidae Festival on February 1, 2026. The colourful event drew dignitaries from across the country to the Mnahyia Palace in Kumasi.

His Majesty is expected to return in March.
