Ghana to Deploy Defence Attachés to 6 High-risk Countries

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Brogya Genfi, has announced plans to deploy Defence Attachés to six high-risk countries to bolster the protection of Ghanaians abroad.

These countries include Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Israel, Iran, and Libya.

It comes after a terrorist attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso, which claimed eight lives and left three injured.

He made these measures known to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Defence, Interior, Foreign Affairs and National Security during a meeting.

Ghana is also collaborating with Burkinabe authorities through targeted training to improve escort duties and security, he noted.

The Deputy Minister added that some security personnel will be selected for academic and intelligence-based training.

He stressed the fact that the training will be done at specialised training centres focusing on escort operations, forming part of a broader strategy to safeguard Ghanaian citizens both domestically and internationally.

Genfi also revealed that two Forward Operating Bases in Jirapa and Hamile are ready and will soon be fully operational to strengthen security along Ghana’s northern borders.

He further reported that additional surveillance had been intensified along key border corridors to prevent future attacks.

Accompanying the Deputy Defence Minister to the meeting were the Chief Director, Mr Emmanuel Kartey, Chief of the Naval Staff Rear Admiral Livinus Bessing, Chief of Defence Intelligence Major General Stephen Woseadzipko Kweku Parbey, Director Public Relations, Ministry of Defence Colonel Ernestina Assan and Director Finance and Administration, Ministry of Defence Madam Adwoa Assan.
