Ghana Partners with European Union on Security and Defence

Ghana has entered a Security and Defense partnership with the European Union following a visit by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, Her Excellency Ms. Kaja Kallas.

The agreement was signed on March 24, 2026, when the Vice President, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, officially welcomed her into the country.

The agreement makes Ghana the first African country to enter into this strategic arrangement, alongside partners such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Norway.

In her speech, the veep underscored that the visit marks an important step in deepening the longstanding partnership between Ghana and the European Union.

She acknowledged the European Union’s ongoing support for Ghana through the European Peace Facility and the EU Security and Defense Initiative, which has backed over 30 security-related projects spanning conflict prevention, counterterrorism, border management, maritime security, and cybersecurity.

In light of recent developments in the sub-region, including the tragic loss of Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso, the vice president emphasised the urgency of strengthening strategic partnerships to safeguard peace and stability.

“Peace remains the foundation of development, and this partnership is a crucial step toward securing our collective future.”

A highlight of the visit was the handover of security equipment, including Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) vehicles, counter-UAV systems, motorcycles, and drones envisioned to improve the operational readiness of our security forces and support Ghana’s efforts to respond effectively to emerging threats.
