Ghana Bans Export of Maize, Rice, Others
Ghana has instituted an indefinite ban on the export of grains as a proactive measure against anticipated food shortage in the country due to drought.
This was announced by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon Bryan Acheampong at a press briefing.
At the presser on Monday, August 27, the Minister said maize, rice, and soya beans will no longer be exported until the situation normalizes.
He noted that this measure is aimed at ensuring a continuous supply of grains on the market to forestall inflation.
“With immediate effect, the government is placing a ban on the export of grains including maize, rice, and soya bean until the situation normalizes. This measure is essential to ensure the availability of these critical crops on the domestic market,” he is quoted as saying by Graphic.
“Any farmer with stock and interested in selling should contact our district directors across the country, our district aggregators, or the directorate of crops, Ministry of Agriculture. This is to ensure that farmers do not suffer adversely as a result of this ban,” he added.
The lack of rain in parts of the country for irrigation of grains for some time now has been a major cause of concern for many farmers.
