GFP Withdrawal from Presidential Election Fake
The Executives of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) have discredited reports that it has decided to withdraw from the upcoming Presidential elections following the death of their founder and Presidential aspirant, Madam Akua Donkor.
In the fake letter purportedly addressed to the Electoral Commission (EC) on November 5, 2024, the GFP said, the decision is aimed at honouring Madam Donkor for her commitment, sacrifice and hard work.
“This decision irrespective of how difficult it may has been reached to post-humorously honour the commitment and sacrifices by our late founder and Presidential candidate as the only person to send her candidature to the grave,” a part of the letter read.
But opemsuo.com is reliably informed that the letter is fake as Philip Appiah Kubi popularly known as Roman Fada who has been nominated to replace Madam Donkor is at the EC office filing his nomination.
The only female presidential candidate in this year’s election passed away at the Ridge Hospital on Monday, October 28, 2024, while receiving treatment.
Her death prompted the EC to halt the printing of the ballot papers which were nearing completion to enable the GFP to nominate a candidate in her stead.
Directing the party to elect a replacement, it explained that the 1992 Constitution and the Public Elections Regulations, 2020, C.I. 127, are not clear on processes to follow in the event of the death of a Presidential Candidate.
However, it noted that Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution provides that “Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations…”
