Garden City University Presents Presidential Charter to Asantehene
The Management of Garden City University (GCU) has presented its newly conferred Presidential Charter to the Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
This means the institution has the autonomy to award its own degrees, diplomas, and certificates without affiliating with established universities.
At the first Awukudae Festival of the year on January 1, 2025, the Management of the institution led by Kenyaasehene Barima Fredua Agyeman made the presentation to the King.
This comes 20 years after the institution was established by Mr Albert Acquah.
“The school has received autonomy. We came to inform Otumfuo about this good news,” Kenyasehene said on behalf of Management.
Asantehene’s Role
In his speech, Mr Albert Acquah recollected the role the King played in the establishment of the university.
“When Otumfuo ascended the Golden Stool, he met young Ghanaians in America and counselled us to come black home and help. I listened and thought of how I could help. It was a great counsel.”
“It was quite difficult when we started but after a visit by Otumfuo, we realised it began to soar. It has been widely patronised.”
Delegation
Among the delegation were Mr KA Karikari, Registrar, Prof Yaw Osei, Dean for Allied Health Sciences, Dr Tweneboah Kodua, Director of Institutional Advancement, Mr Kwame Fosu, Director of Golden Company, Miss Theresah Darko, Counsellor, Dr Mrs Yaa Oberekorang, Coordinator for Nursing Programme, Mrs Akosua Asamoah, Dean of Students Affairs and Nana Dr Kwaku Owusu Kwarteng, Acting President and Vice President.
Autonomy
The institution was part of 14 colleges that were granted autonomy by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the latter part of December.
They were National Defence College, KAAF University College, Heritage Christian University College, Ensign Global College, University College of Gold Coast, Knutsford University College, Thrivus Institute for Biomedical Sciences and Technology, Nobel International Business School, Entrance University College of Health Sciences, Accra Metropolitan University College, African University College of Communications, Family Health University College and Academic City University College.
