Galamsey: EPA Rolls Out River Cleaning Exercise Pilot

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) will tomorrow roll out a Pilot Water Cleaning Exercise on the Birim River at Adiukrom in the Asiakwa Area.

The exercise slated to take place at 8 am will mark the launch of an initiative instituted to combat the growing pollution of water bodies, particularly as a result of illegal mining activities.

In a statement, it said the pilot intervention is designed to demonstrate practical, scientifically guided methods for restoring degraded river systems and strengthening long-term water resource management.

It will be undertaken in collaboration with key national institutions, including the Ghana Water Company Limited, the Water Resources Commission, the Water Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, the Ghana Standards Authority, SciencePlus, and Fillish Solutions.

The Authority has also invited members of the public and all interested stakeholders to attend and observe the initiative.

“Illegal mining has significantly impacted water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and access to safe drinking water. The EPA remains committed to safeguarding Ghana’s water resources through coordinated, science-based interventions and stakeholder partnerships.”
