Friday Declared Holiday
The Ministry of Interior has reminded the public about the upcoming Founders’ Day holiday.
It will be commemorated on Friday, August 4, 2023.
Founders’ Day is set aside to commemorate the contribution of “the Big Six” to Ghana’s Independence.
Previously Founder’s Day and commemorated on the 21st day of September in honour of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the Akufo-Addo-led government in 2016 amended the Public Holidays Act 2001 (Act 601).
The amendment renamed the 21st September holiday Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day. Additionally, the Republic Day holiday (1st July) was amended as a commemorative day.
According to the Parliament of Ghana, the decision to amend it was to honour Dr Kwame Nkrumah- by making 21st day of September which is his birthday, a National Holiday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Interior said, “The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 4th August 2023 which marks Founders’ Day, is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”
