Torkornoo Removal Has Weakened Judiciary- Sophia Akuffo

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has opposed the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama.

In her view, the move has weakened the judicial institution of the country.

“My honest and candid view is that this has so weakened the institution of the judiciary,” she is quoted as saying by 3News.

She fells the punitive action was disproportionate to the accusations.

“They lack the gravity that will lead to a grave outcome, such as the removal of the head of an institution of justice.”

It is also her take that the processes for the removal of the CJ weren’t fair.

“She did not get a fair trial. Even though it is not a trial, strictly speaking, it was handled as though it were a treason trial.”

The Presidency announced the removal of the Torkornoo on September 1, 2025, citing  Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.

The decision followed receipt of a committee report on an investigation into a petition by one Mr Daniel Ofori.

According to the Presidency, the report established misbehaviour under Article 146(1) and recommended her removal from office.
