Forestry Commission Training Centre Holds First Matriculation Ceremony
The Forestry Commission Training Centre (FCTC) has held its first matriculation and inauguration ceremony for students pursuing the Certificate in Natural Resources Management programme.
Speaking to Opemsuo News Reporter Johnson Owusu Aduomi, Hon. Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, Director of FCTC, emphasized that the new course is designed to provide practical knowledge and competencies to students, increasing their employability.
The eighteen-month course has admitted 67 students, comprising 53 males and 14 females, as the first batch.
Hon. Okrah explained that the Forestry Commission faces challenges in fieldwork due to a lack of technical expertise among their staff in the reserves.
To address this, the commission has introduced training for technical-level professionals. Students will receive practical skills in forestry and wildlife resources, with a focus on leadership and entrepreneurship, enabling them to create their own resources and management enterprises.
“Graduates will receive a certificate from the University of Energy and Natural Resources. FCTC has provided resources and tools for learning.”
The special guest, Hon. Akwasi Konadu, Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North and Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, applauded FCTC for introducing this technical learning programme.
He noted that the skills acquired will not only enhance competencies but also provide the necessary courage and knowledge to protect forest reserves and combat illegal activities.
Hon. Konadu disclosed that the ministry has not stopped fighting against illegal mining activities and has implemented measures to curb the menace. He explained that Community Mining initiative aims to bring together communities to extract natural resources sustainably.
Mr. John M. Allotey, Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, stated that the commission is mandated to regulate wildlife resource utilization, ensure conservation and management, and coordinate related policies. He emphasized the need for a well-trained force, particularly middle-level staff, to replace retirees.
Furthermore, Professor Elvis Asare Bediako, Vice Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources, encouraged students to avail themselves of knowledge and skills to better their lives and the environment. He stressed that this course will serve as a key to natural resources security for mankind.
A memorandum of understanding was signed on November 27, 2023, between the University and the Forestry Commission to begin this academic collaboration, enrolling students in Natural Resources at FCTC.
