Foreign Ministry Denies Issuing Fake Airline Ticket to Mother of Deceased Ghanaian Student in Latvia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied abandoning the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who tragically lost his life under unusual circumstances while studying at Riga Technical University in Latvia.
It was alleged that the Ministry had demanded payments to facilitate the travel of the deceased’s mother; issued her a fake airline ticket; and subsequently left for Latcia without her.

Responding to the claims, the Ministry rejected the claims as false, misleading and unfounded.

Denying assertions on the payment, it stated the Government of Ghana is fully bearing the cost of all travel arrangements for two duly nominated family members and a pathologist to Latvia.

No Trip
It said it also actively facilitated the visa application process for the nominated family members, who were initially scheduled to travel by 31 January 2026.

However, they could not make the trip due to delays in visa issuance by the relevant authorities.

“It must be clearly stated that, at the time of their visa appointments, the family members failed to present all the requisite documentation. Upon receipt of the outstanding documents, the Ministry promptly facilitated their submission to the concerned Embassy,” it explained.

It added, “The Ministry formally notified the mother of the deceased on Friday evening and again on Saturday that travel could not proceed as scheduled, as the visas had not yet been issued and the passports remained in the custody of the Embassy.”

Air Ticket Issues
With the issue of the alleged fake ticket, the Ministry reported that the bereaved mother, on Saturday evening, went to the airport with a supplementary visa application document detailing the itinerary for the trip to approach the airline counter.

This, she did in the company of bloggers for what she described as evidentiary purposes, she reportedly told a Foreign Affairs Ministry official on the phone.

“She was expressly informed by the Ministry’s official in contact with her that the document in her possession was not a confirmed airline ticket, but merely an itinerary generated exclusively to support the visa application process, and that travel was not possible in the absence of her passport.

Securing Visa
In its statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said it is engaged with the relevant authorities to secure the outstanding visas.

“It must be firmly stated that the deliberate distortion of facts and the circulation of misinformation on a matter of this gravity are deeply regrettable and will not be countenanced, as such actions mislead the public, undermine confidence in state institutions, and detract from the collective effort to establish the truth surrounding the tragic death of a Ghanaian citizen.”

It said this while reiterating its unwavering commitment to the protection and welfare of Ghanaians abroad and the pursuit of justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia.
