FDA Says It’s Working to Apprehend Persons Behind Galamsey Sachet Water

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is planning to arrest persons behind the packaging of illegally mining polluted water into sachets and its circulation in markets.

This effort is being undertaken with the help of the various security agencies, it said in a press statement on October 21, 2024.

“The Food and Drugs Authority expresses deep concern regarding the packaging of a product in sachet labelled as ‘galamsey water’ linked to illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as ‘galamsey’ in the country.”

“The FDA warns that the packaging of unwholesome water not only undermines public health and safety but also poses significant health risk to the population.”

The Authority also discouraged the public against supporting such ventures.

Last week some anti-galamsey protesters packaged the said water in sachets to portray the country’s future with its water bodies if decisive actions are not taken against illegal mining.

Together with hawkers, the said water was paraded in pans in principal streets to wake Ghanaians up to the harsh reality.

This is one of the many protests that have since the end of September taken place in the country to call for action by the government.
