England Head Coach Resigns after Euro Failure
In the aftermath of England’s European Championship heartbreak, the head coach of the Three Lions, Gareth Southgate has stepped down after eight years in charge.
The former player led the team to their second Euro final this year but failed to register their first title after losing by 2-1 to Spain.
In a statement announcing his resignation, he said he gave his all to the team both as a player and Manager and discerned the time was due to flip to a new chapter as perhaps he is not destined for a tournament glory.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.
“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”
Southgate used the occasion to appreciate the support of his squads, fans and the backroom staff.
The 53-year-old was in charge of 102 games, managing England at four major tournaments, reaching the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and quarter-finals in 2022.
Spain had the honour of lifting their fourth Euro title on July 14 in Germany at the expense of England who still needs to wait and work a little harder for their first.
In 2020, the Three Lions under Southgate missed the title in the finals after losing to Italy on penalties.
Meanwhile the FA has begun processes to find his replacement.
