Eduwatch Backs WAEC’s Rejection of NUGs Representation Exam Committee

Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) has thrown its weight behind the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC)’s rejection of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) representation on its exam committee.
The conversation was ignited by the cancellation of some subject results and entire results of some candidates in the 2025 Basic Education and Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to WAEC, the cancellation followed detected examination malpractices.
It is the case of Eduwatch that the issue at hand goes beyond sitting on a Technical Committee that reviews scripts and cancels results.
The Executive Director of the education think tanks, Kofi Asare, in a Facebook post affirmed the need for an independent regulator for all the external assessment bodies, including WAEC.
“This regulator will operate an independent complaints office where clients can seek an independent, external review of WAEC decisions. MoE can decide to amend the Education Regulatory Bodies Law and mandate NaCCA to regulate, instead of another new agency.”
Rather than seeking representation, he suggested that NUGS joins the advocacy for inclusive system reforms.
“We need a Regulatory Body that will set and enforce external assessment standards, sanction non-compliance and administer real-time fairness in external assessments.”
