DVLA to Issue Licence Plates in Names of Individuals From 2026

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced a review in the issuance of licence plates effective next year.
The plan is to issue vehicle licence plates in the names of individuals.
This means is that, the vehicle number in the possession of an individual, belongs to the individual who has a responsibility to take off the number plate at a time of change in ownership.
“Once implemented, every vehicle owner is entreated to see their vehicle numbers as their personal numbers with additional responsibility of protecting same.
“When vehicles are transferred from the immediate owner, that owner owes a responsibility to himself to take off the number to allow the new owner to go through the process to secure an assigned number to be fixed on the vehicle,” it explained in a statement.
The Authority intends to link a unique vehicle number to an individual with the collaboration of security agencies within the transport ecosystem.
In it’s notice, it said the effort is geared towards ensuring security and safety on roads.
