Democracy Hub Demo: Violence Isn’t The Way- Cheddar
The leader and founder of the New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar has condemned the violence that characterised a recent demonstration by pressure group, Democracy Hub.
Though he shares the concerns of the youth, he indicated that they chose the wrong approach to get their message to the government.
“Today I’m seeing some videos that I’m not happy about and I want to appeal to the youth of this country that power is taken and not given and if we want to take power, we have to do it with knowledge and wisdom,” he said of the protest which had over 40 people arrested by the police.
“After all, power comes from knowledge. I want us to use our knowledge. Violence of course is not going to be the right way for us to send the message. This year is a voting year and I want us to be peaceful as we are known as Ghanaians
“I’m appealing to you and I’m asking the youth of this country. I know a lot of things are not going right but we have to be patient. We have to be patient and we have to know that Ghana is our only country. We cannot go anywhere else if we mess it up. Instead of messing it up, let’s build it up.”
The Presidential aspirant emphasized that “violence is not the way”.
The three-day protest against illegal mining started on September 21 and ended on September 23. On the second day, the police arrested 42 of the protesters including some leaders.
According to a statement by the police, the demonstrators unlawfully assembled at the 37 Intersection and attacked Police officers performing their lawful duties.
It said they entered a Police vehicle, removed the ignition key and threw it away, pushing down Police crash barriers, “obstructing traffic, causing unlawful damage, and disturbing the peace among others”.
