Death Trap at Race Course
Traders and drivers at Race Course, a locality in Kumasi, are facing a serious safety hazard due to a broken bridge that has turned the road into a death trap. Heavy rains caused the river to overflow its banks, leading to the washing away of a part of the bridge, thereby reducing the road’s size.
Adwoa Serwaa Yonkodo, a reporter from Opemsuo News, visited the scene and found that most of the drivers were taking extra precautions to avoid accidents while using the road.
One driver expressed his concern, saying, “It started five years ago, but nothing has been done to fix it, and the situation keeps getting worse. This is very dangerous. It feels like driving on a road close to a big gutter. Anyone can fall into it, especially a driver who is new in the area. If you are not careful, you will fall into the gutter.”
The station master at the location also spoke out about the issue, stating that drivers have been complaining about the broken bridge for years, but nothing has been done to fix it. He urged the authorities to take immediate action before a tragic incident occurs.
In an interview with Opemsuo News, Hon. Kwabena Boateng, the Assemblyman, revealed that, he has been following up on the issue since 2022. He informed the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) about the situation and even went with his team to take pictures and wrote a report, but nothing has been done to fix the bridge.
He expressed his concern and said, “It is a source of worry. We all know how difficult it is for the district assembly to get or even release funds for such projects. I will continue to follow up on this issue and urge the authorities to take immediate action to fix this dangerous bridge and prevent any potential accidents”.
