Dampare Attributes Rise In Ranks To Diligence

The Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akufo Dampare has attributed his rise in the ranks of the police Service to his diligence and passion for the profession.

During his appearance before the Parliamentary Ad-hoc Committee probing leaked audio of persons plotting his removal on September 12, he chronicled his trajectory towards his current rank to affirm it was based on merit and not favour.

After becoming a Police Constable in 1991, the IGP said he rose to become a Superintendent of Police in just 6 years in 1997, a progress he called “unprecedented”.

He says he noticed a policy in the Police Service that correlates the rise in academia to promotion and took advantage of it.

According to him, President Akufo-Addo found him worthy as the next IGP after 24 years of his competence, hard work and academic qualification after James Oppong-Boanuh retired.

“So in terms of my ranking in the police service, it has been purely based on my competencies, my academic qualifications and hard work because of the passion I have for the work. I have not at any point in time been called aside by any individual and granted me any favour,” he concluded.

The ad-hoc parliamentary committee is investigating a leaked audio in which three officers- Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr George A. Mensah, Superintendent Mr Emmanuel E. Gyebi and Superintendent Mr George Lysander Asare- and the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu were captured plotting the removal of Dr Dampare.

On September 4, 2023, when Supt George Asare appeared before the Committee, he disclosed Daniel Bugri Naabu claimed he recommended Dampare for the position of IGP to the President.
