Dam Spillage: Ablakwa Launches “MP’s Mobile Relief Caravan”
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has launched an initiative he calls the “MP’s Mobile Relief Caravan”.
The initiative comes in the wake of the displacement of thousands of people in his constituency amid the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams in the Volta Region.
He launched it on Monday, October 16, 2023 to develop an effective distribution system to ensure that all 19 camps for displaced persons in the constituency regularly receive relief items without bottlenecks.
In a Facebook post he said his office had secured a relief package for distribution across all the 19 camps.
“The MP’s office has secured a relief package comprising bags of rice, maize, sugar, cooking oil, canned fish, mosquito nets, detergents, tissues, mosquito repellents, sanitary towels, life jackets and tissues for onward distribution to all camps.”
He estimates that 10,000 of his constituents have been displaced by the ongoing spillage.
The lawmaker is also demanding a compensation for victims of flood. Earlier he took to social media to say the situation is avoidable.
“This large-scale devastation of biblical proportion was totally avoidable if the VRA management had put in place the right safety precautions and adequate community engagement, particularly, as they were the only ones who knew the quantum of water to be discharged and the dire implications for life and property. That would have averted the unfolding catastrophe.”
