Communication Minister Engages Courier Riders on Regulatory Reforms and Police Harassment

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has met with courier and delivery riders to address concerns over excessive platform charges, police harassment, and regulatory challenges.
He noted that the Ministry is working with the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Transport to allow independent riders to register directly on delivery platforms without joining fleet operators, ensuring fairer fees and better working conditions.
Hon. George also pledged to engage the Minister for the Interior to curb police harassment of riders, stressing that legitimate workers should not be unduly targeted.
It comes after the Minister in August caused the suspension of the enforcement of the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission’s enforcement action.
The enforcement done in conjunction with the Ghana Police Service saw mass arrests over their failure to license their operations as courier services with the regulatory body.
In a statement on August 22, the Minister acknowledged the necessity of the action for sanity and order; however, he indicated that it must be done with sensitivity.
He suggested that stakeholder engagements and public sensitisation before the enforcement activities were a prerequisite.
“We must enforce the law with a humane face to it. I would, in the coming days, have meetings with the various stakeholders and fashion out an agreeable roadmap to implementation.”
