Cohabitation is not Marriage, Says Methodist Church Leader
The Methodist Church’s Very Rev. Janet Osei Kuffour, who oversees Gender and Family Life matters at the Amakom branch, has clarified that cohabitation should not be equated to marriage.
She emphasised that simply living together as a couple, regardless of the length of time, does not necessarily constitute a valid marriage.
“Living together does not equate to marriage, regardless of the duration of the relationship,” she stressed.
Rev. Osei Kuffour urged women to prioritise legal unions over cohabitation.
These comments were made during an episode of the Masem programme, where Abena Nkwanta expressed her disappointment at being excluded from her late partner’s funeral card.
Despite having lived with Kofi Boateng for 17 years until his passing, his family denied recognizing her as his legal wife.
Although, the family acknowledged providing financial support to her for her upkeep in accordance with Akan tradition after the loss of a spouse, they maintained that they had done so out of sympathy and not because they acknowledged her as a legal wife
As a result, the issue remains unresolved, leaving Abena Nkwanta with lingering questions and unresolved emotions.
